Melham was shadow Aboriginal Affairs minister from 1996 until his resignation a couple of years later.

One of those increasingly marginal Sydney seats due to growing pockets of prosperity. Overlayed by volatility that has seen big swings in both directions in the last decade.

Came close to going Liberal in 1996.
