The Australian is having another go at pushing this story. The actual text of the story doesn't lend much support to the headline that 'mutineers are circling Kevin Rudd'.

JD I don't know much about Gordon Brown but Costello in particular struck me as a quite typically vain politician for whom the romantic notion of what might have been is far better than a failed premiership.

^

I think it's more about claiming a "scalp", no matter how useful or useless he is. And a PM in his first term is the biggest scalp there is.

Good article, Mr Mumble.

You'd have to ask, "what does the opposition want to happen most, Rudd to go or Rudd to stay?"

The answer is clear - Rudd to go. If he was such a liability, then they'd be happy for him to hang around.

No, it's all designed to get rid of him because, as Mr Mumble points out correctly, this would serve them well. Rudd and Gillard are a formidable team and the opposition knows it.

There probably are some people who think it would be a good idea to switch from Rudd to Gillard. But there are also some people whose job it is to fill up media space with news reports and news commentary, and they have to find things to say even when nothing is actually happening.

On another point: Gordon Brown had three years as PM; Peter Costello had nought. I figure three years as PM has to be better than nought.

Well put. It's notable that no-one other than journalists has been quoted in the recent round of leadership speculation and once the MPs got together for the current week of parliament they were reported to be worried, but calm.
